Many people say they want to read more, but their reading plan is “be a different person.” A better plan is designing the environment.

Attach reading to a cue

Pick a reading cue: after dinner, before sleep, or on the commute. Attach reading to something that already happens.

Remove friction

Keep a book where you rest. Use an e-reader app for quick access. Remove friction so the default becomes reading.

Lower the bar

Ten pages counts. Five minutes counts. You are training the identity of being a reader.

Finally, stop forcing books you do not enjoy. Taste is not a moral issue. If a book is not working, switch. Reading returns when it feels like pleasure, not homework.

Reading habit rule: make it easy to start, then let momentum do the rest.
